Welcome to
Clare Bloomer

Welcome to my online portfolio. Here you’ll find examples of my work in many different areas.  I am first and foremost an actor deeply committed to theatre.  As founder of Essential Stage Theatre Company I present high quality work that places women centre stage and provides a platform for emerging talent.  As an acting teacher my role is to enable the actor in training to become autonomous and joyful in the enquiry, process and practice of the art form.  Essential Voice was created to help performers and non performers "speak easy" with confidence and effectiveness.  Please go ahead and browse the rest of my site and I would love to hear from you if you would like to know more.

Essential Stage

After living in Ibiza for many years, in 2015 I returned to London and in 2016 I set up Essential Stage.

I enjoy examining established plays with a fresh and female eye. Productions include Afterplay by Brian Friel, The Glass House by Elizabeth Lewis and Shadows of the Evening by Noël Coward.

The challenge with period plays is to get under the surface and find the radicalism.  Often these plays were bold and challenging in their day, so my aim is to find ways to ignite that spirit.  With contemporary texts I must be able to answer "why this now?"

I enjoy working rigorously and will always pare back to reveal the essential.

Cassandra Theatre Company

After RADA I ran Cassandra Theatre Company with Vanessa Mildenberg.  We were progressive and placed women in the heart of the theatre making process, on and off stage. We produced and performed in the UK premiere of Crossing by Reza de Wet at the Riverside Studios to great reviews, and subsequently found ourselves in the offices of West End producers and we remain forever grateful to Sonia Friedman, Brigid Larmour and Thelma Holt who generously gave us their time, encouragement and support.
Cassandra presented over 10 rehearsed readings of new plays by new writers at RADA and the Old Vic, working closely with Kate Pakenham as she developed the exciting new venture, Old Vic New Voices.

Essential Voice

Essential Voice was created in Ibiza.  For two years the weekly sessions became a space for women to find their voice and grow in confidence.  Our mantra became "giving the quiet voice the space to be heard".  We investigated the way we feel when we create sound, how we use our voice to communicate and what it means to have authority.  This developed into bespoke workshops, courses and public sharings of work.  I have since worked with people in business in London and Ibiza, helping them to realise their full potential as thoughtful leaders and dynamic speakers.  If you would like to find out more, please get in touch.

Directing for the Theatre

I relish the exhilarating journey of process, discovery and decision making.  Each production is unique because every cast and creative member is unique, for me embracing this simple truth is essential.  Productions include Excerpts from FAME (2022), Les Miserables (2021), Into The Woods (2019) and Company (2017) for Dance Overture at New Theatre Wimbledon for London Studio Centre, After Orlando for the Finborough Theatre, Private View by Vaclav Havel and Catastrophe by Samuel Beckett at Drayton Studio Theatre and RADA Festival 2015.  I have also directed a number of rehearsed readings.

Teaching and Coaching

I am Lead Acting Tutor at London Studio Centre for students studying BA Theatre Dance (on the Musical Theatre pathway).  I really enjoy working with dancers who act and sing.  Although different, I believe acting is as much a physical form of expression as dance and the body can be a dynamic route to great acting.  I encourage actors to trust in and use their bodies and I am forever investigating creative, useful and inspiring ways for actors to rely less on their cognitive intelligence.  Words, thoughts and feelings are action.

I also teach individuals and groups and create bespoke training courses.  I specialise in Voice and Text, Text into Performance, Creating a Role, Acting Through Song, MT Scene Study, Classical and Contemporary Text/Scene Study including Chekhov, Ibsen, Shakespeare and Devising. I co-created An Actor Prepares - a 7 week introduction to acting course for Studio 8 in Ibiza.  I coach actors preparing for a role and I work with students wishing to audition for drama school.

Working With Me

I am extremely interested in working with new people in creative collaborations.  I offer workshops in Classical Text, Voice and Text, Text into Performance, Script Annotation and Analysis, Creating a Role, Acting Through Song, MT Scene Study, Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen and the C19 Realists.  I can create bespoke workshops or training courses in Essential Voice for performers and non performers, for individuals or groups wishing to develop their communication skills.  As a director I particularly enjoy working at the development stage: directing rehearsed and staged readings and have a lot of experience working on new plays with both experienced and inexperienced playwrights.
